What bag does Bella Hadid carry?

A glossy black Saint Laurent Mombasa, photographed in New York. Rosé carried one in Seoul and Kiko Mizuhara a chestnut-brown version in Paris — the shape is a soft crescent worn under the arm on a short strap.

The bag is the Mombasa, and what makes it worth understanding is not the label but where it sits on the body.

The mechanism. A Mombasa is a crescent that tucks into the armpit and rests against the ribs. A bag in that position holds your upper arm slightly away from your body and pushes your shoulder back — you cannot slouch convincingly while carrying one. That is a real, reproducible effect and it has nothing to do with who made the thing. Any soft, unstructured crescent on a short strap does it.

Why it keeps coming back. This shape has returned roughly every fifteen years since the 1990s, because the posture effect is independent of fashion. The strap length is doing the work: short enough to hold the bag at the ribs reads deliberate, while the same bag on a long strap at the hip reads casual.

The honest trade-off. A bag held under the arm is a bag you cannot forget about. It is not a commuting bag and not one for carrying anything heavy. It suits days when your hands are mostly free.
