What strap drop do I need for a crossbody bag?
About 22 inches or more for the bag to sit properly across the body on most adults. Anything quoted at 18 to 20 inches is a shoulder strap, whatever the listing calls the bag.
Strap drop is the measurement from the top of the strap to the top of the bag — in other words, how far the bag hangs below the strap's highest point. It is quoted on most listings and it is the single number that decides whether a bag works the way you intend.
The useful figures. Around 10 to 12 inches is a shoulder bag that sits under the arm. Around 18 to 20 inches reaches the hip on the shoulder but will ride up uncomfortably high if you wear it across the body. From about 22 inches it sits properly crossbody on most adults, and 24 to 26 inches gives room to wear it over a coat.
Why coats change the answer. A winter coat adds a couple of inches to your chest measurement, so a strap that sits correctly in summer rides up under the arm in November. If a bag is for winter, look for at least two inches of spare adjustment beyond what you currently use.
Adjustable is worth paying for. A strap that genuinely adjusts by buckle turns one bag into two — long for hands-free and practical, short for hip-height and dressed. Knotting a leather strap to shorten it is not an adjustment; it is damage.
