Will my phone fit in a clutch bag?
Only if the clutch’s interior measurement is larger than your phone, which is about 6½ by 3 inches for a current large handset. Check the interior dimensions, not the exterior — a rigid frame can take more than a centimeter.
This is the most common disappointment with evening bags, and it happens because many clutch designs were drawn around a handset from fifteen years ago.
Measure your phone first. A current large phone is roughly 6½ inches tall and 3 inches wide, and a case adds a few millimeters on every side. Measure yours with the case on, because that is what is going in the bag.
Then read the right number. Listings usually give exterior dimensions, which on a structured bag can overstate the usable space by more than half an inch once you account for the frame, the lining and any padding. Look for interior measurements. If a seller only gives exterior figures on a rigid bag, assume the inside is meaningfully smaller.
The failure is usually the opening, not the volume. Most phones will go inside most clutches. What stops the bag closing is the width of the opening, particularly on a framed kiss-lock design where the mouth is narrower than the body. If the opening measurement is not given, a soft or zip-top clutch is the safer buy, because it can deform around an awkward object and a rigid frame cannot.
If it is marginal, a clutch with a detachable chain is the sensible compromise — you can carry the phone in your hand during the parts of an evening where the bag is full.
