Kaia Gerber turned up at the US Open with a tiger-print pony hair Fendi Baguette from the Fall 2026 collection, and Jennifer Lawrence was at the same event with a leopard Prada Galleria. Two animal prints on one afternoon is not a coincidence, and it is worth understanding why this particular pattern keeps coming back rather than filing it as a loud choice.
Animal print is the only pattern that behaves like a neutral, and the reason is simply its palette. A leopard or tiger print is made entirely of browns, blacks, creams and golds — every colour in it is already a neutral, so the print as a whole coordinates the way a brown bag does. Put a floral or a stripe against a navy coat and you are making a decision about colour. Put leopard against the same coat and you are not; you are adding texture.
That is why it turns up so often on people who are not otherwise dressed loudly. Both of these women were in fairly plain clothes. The bag was doing the interest and none of the coordinating.
Two practical things. Print scale matters more than the print. A small, dense pattern at handbag size reads as texture from across a room; a large-scale print with big blocks reads as a statement. Look at the photograph from a distance and see which one you are getting. And pony hair is calf hair, which is beautiful and genuinely high-maintenance: it marks with water, it sheds a little, and it cannot be wiped down the way smooth leather can. Lovely for a dry afternoon, wrong for a winter commute.

Animal print is a neutral in disguise — every colour in it is already brown, black, cream or gold, so it coordinates rather than competes. Buy it if you want interest without a colour decision. Then check the scale from across the room, and check the material: pony hair marks with water and cannot be cleaned like leather.
