Why brown is doing better than black right now. Black absorbs light, so a black bag against dark autumn clothing becomes a silhouette with no detail — you cannot see the shape, the grain or the hardware, only an outline. Brown holds its value range in low light, so the leather still reads as leather. In the flat, gray light of October that difference is most of why one looks considered and the other looks like a hole in the photograph.
The rule people are still nervous about. Brown with black used to be a faux pas and is now a standard styling move, which is worth knowing if you have been avoiding it. It works best when the brown is clearly brown — a warm chocolate or tan — rather than a near-black brown that just looks like black that went wrong.
The practical argument, which nobody makes. Brown hides wear far better. Scuffs on black leather show as pale gray marks because the scuff exposes lighter material under the dye; on mid-brown they blend into the existing tonal variation.
