Margot Robbie’s cascading drop earrings
A press tour is the most disciplined styling exercise in fashion, and this one ran its argument through the earrings.
Wearing: Wuthering Heights press tour — Diamond, garnet and pearl drop earrings by Jessica McCormack
Margot Robbie's Wuthering Heights tour was styled by Andrew Mukamal as a sustained piece of costume argument, and the jewellery carried more of it than the clothes did. For the London premiere the choice was diamond, garnet and pearl drop earrings by Jessica McCormack, a jeweller who works in Victorian and Georgian idioms — which is to say the earrings were doing period reference without anybody having to wear a bonnet.
Garnet is the detail worth noticing. It is a dark, slightly muddy red that photographs as almost black under a flashbulb and reads as blood-coloured in daylight, and for a Brontë adaptation that is not an accident. This is what press-tour styling is: a visual argument about a film, made at fifty events, where the only variable small enough to change every night is the jewellery.
The wider trend it sits inside is a move away from the tidy, minimal studs of the quiet-luxury years towards long, romantic, cascading drops. Who What Wear put Robbie's earrings at the front of exactly that shift.
For the rest of us the useful part is mechanical rather than narrative. A cascading drop is a series of articulated sections rather than one solid piece, so it moves independently as you move, and it catches light in a way a fixed drop cannot. That movement is the whole effect.
What transfers
Articulation matters more than size. A long earring made of one rigid piece hangs dead and reads heavy; the same length split into linked sections swings, catches light and reads light. If you are choosing between two drops of similar length, pick up both — the one that moves in your hand is the one that will move on you.
