Priyanka Chopra’s black tote
September is the month you leave the house warm and come home cold. Your bag has to hold the answer to that.
Wearing: A black maxi dress, late August — A classic black structured tote, with a maxi dress and strappy heels
Priyanka Chopra wore a black maxi dress with strappy heels and a classic black structured tote, and the coverage called it versatile for the transition into autumn. It is, and the reason is more practical than it sounds.
We have argued elsewhere on this site that a black bag disappears, and that a warm brown does more for you. Both things are still true — but disappearing is precisely the job in September. For about six weeks your clothes are neither one season nor the other, and a bag that refuses to comment on any of it is genuinely useful. Black is the only colour that sits as comfortably against a summer dress as against the first wool coat.
The part nobody mentions is capacity, and it is the whole September problem. You leave at eight in a dress because it is warm, and you come home at seven and it is not, and the cardigan or the light jacket has to go somewhere. A small bag means carrying that layer over your arm all day, which looks exactly as unresolved as it sounds.
So when you are buying the transitional bag, the test is not how it looks on the model. Take the lightest layer you actually own, roll it, and check it against the bag's stated opening and depth. A structured tote with a wide base and an open or magnetic top takes a rolled cardigan without deforming. A small cross-body does not, and no amount of styling gets around that.
What transfers
Between seasons, buy the bag that holds a layer. You will leave warm and return cold for about six weeks, and the difference between a good day and an irritating one is whether your cardigan has somewhere to go. Black earns its keep here for the same reason it is boring the rest of the year — it refuses to comment on what you are wearing.
