Emili Sindlev’s gray socks

The sock stopped being underwear about three years ago. The current answer is gray, which sounds like a non-answer and is not.

Wearing: Street style, August 2026 — Gray Miu Miu socks, worn visibly

Emili Sindlev's gray Miu Miu socks have been cited as the reference point for what has become the It-girl sock color of 2026, and the choice is more considered than it looks.

Socks became visible clothing when trousers got shorter and loafers replaced boots, and the first response was maximalist: white ruffles, sheer black, red, stripes. Those all work by contrast, which means they all take a decision every morning and they all fight something in the outfit.

Gray does the opposite. It is the only color that sits between the two things a sock is normally caught between — a dark shoe and a light trouser, or the reverse — so instead of interrupting the leg line it bridges it. That makes it the one visible sock color that requires no coordination at all, which is presumably why it has spread.

Worth knowing about the material, because this is where cheap socks fail visibly rather than just quickly. Gray shows everything: a cotton-heavy blend pills at the ankle within a few washes and the pilling catches light, which on a mid-gray is far more obvious than on black. A merino or a cotton blend with real nylon content holds its surface. Ribbing matters too — a fine rib stays up the calf, a loose knit slides down and then you are adjusting socks all day.

What transfers

Gray is the sock color that needs no decision, because it bridges a dark shoe and a light trouser instead of contrasting with either. Buy on fiber rather than color: gray shows pilling far more than black does, so look for merino or a nylon-blended cotton, and a fine rib if you want it to stay up.
