Charlotte Casiraghi’s hobo bag

Spanish Harper’s Bazaar built an entire high-street roundup around one bag of hers. That is what a trend actually looks like at the moment it turns.

Wearing: Reported in Spain, where the high street has already copied it — A soft, slouchy hobo carried high on the shoulder

This one came to us through the Spanish press rather than the American or British, and it is a good illustration of how a shape travels. Harper's Bazaar España ran seven high-street hobos — Mango, Sfera, Massimo Dutti — explicitly framed as versions of hers. When the chain stores already have it, the shape has arrived whether or not your local magazines have mentioned it yet.

The hobo is the opposite of everything structured we have had for three seasons. It has no frame, it sags into a crescent under its own weight, and it sits high in the armpit on a single strap. That slouch is the appeal and also the function: a bag with no internal structure molds around what is inside it, so it stays flat against your body when it is half empty instead of holding a rigid box shape away from you.

The reason it suits so many people is the diagonal. A soft bag at the armpit creates a long line from shoulder to opposite hip, and diagonals are lengthening on almost everyone. A structured bag held in the hand creates a horizontal, which is not.

The honest limitation: everything in a hobo migrates to the bottom of the crescent and you will dig. If you carry a lot of small items, look for one with a single internal zip pocket — the difference between annoying and workable is one pocket.

What transfers

When the high street has already copied a shape, you are not early, you are on time — and that is the cheapest moment to buy into it. Watch the chain stores in other countries rather than the runway: Mango and Massimo Dutti move faster than the magazines.
