Zendaya’s diamond watch at the Oscars

Nobody wears a watch to an awards ceremony to know the time. Worn with a gown it stops being a tool and becomes a bracelet.

Wearing: The 98th Academy Awards — A diamond Rolex, worn with a Louis Vuitton dress

Zendaya arrived at the Oscars in a Louis Vuitton dress with a diamond Rolex on her wrist. It is worth pausing on how strange that is in principle: an evening gown is the one context where a watch has no function whatsoever, and she wore one anyway, which means it was there as jewellery.

That is the transferable idea, and it costs nothing to apply. The same watch head reads completely differently depending on what it is attached to. On a leather strap it reads as equipment — practical, daytime, slightly masculine by convention. On a metal bracelet it reads as jewellery, because a bracelet is what it physically is: articulated links that drape and catch light exactly the way a chain does.

So the strap is not a detail you decide last. It decides what the object is. A woman who owns one watch and wants it to work at a dinner as well as a desk should buy it on a metal bracelet, because a bracelet watch can pretend to be jewellery and a leather strap cannot pretend to be anything else.

The second variable is case size. A smaller case reads dressier, for the plain reason that it is closer in scale to a bangle than to an instrument. This is the one specification worth checking before you buy, and it is stated in millimetres on almost every listing.

What transfers

Buy the bracelet, not the strap, if the watch has to do more than one job. Metal links drape and read as jewellery; leather reads as a tool, and no amount of styling talks it out of that. Then check the case diameter in millimetres — under about 34mm reads dressy, over about 40mm reads sporty, and that number is on the listing even when nothing else useful is.

The shape: a metal link bracelet and a smaller case, which is what makes a watch read as jewellery.
