Animal print, and the case for anything but leopard

Zebra, python and cowhide are the fresher half of this. Leopard is the half everyone already owns.

The standard line about animal print is that it functions as a neutral, and for leopard that is genuinely true — a leopard bag goes with black, brown, denim, red and cream without much thought. The problem with leopard is not that it clashes. It is that it is so established it no longer registers as a decision.

The more interesting part of what is being shown is everything else. Zebra, tiger, python and cowhide are all in the season's mix, and they behave differently from leopard because they are high-contrast graphics rather than tonal camouflage. A zebra-print bag is effectively a black-and-white bag with a pattern, which makes it far easier to place than people assume — it works anywhere black works, and it is considerably less predictable.

Texture is doing as much work as pattern this season. Croc-embossed and pony hair are both being shown, and they are the versions that translate best to affordable manufacturing, because an embossed grain is genuinely embossed even on inexpensive material. A printed croc pattern on flat PU is the one to avoid; you can spot it because the scales have no depth and no shadow.

Scale is the thing to check before buying. Print scale should be proportionate to the bag — a large leopard rosette on a small clutch reads as costume, and a tiny repeating print on a big tote reads as upholstery. On a small bag look for a fine, dense print; on a large one, a bolder repeat is fine.

One is the number. An animal-print bag is a loud object and it wants plain everything else, which is the same discipline the faux-fur bags need and for the same reason.

How to wear it

  • Zebra and python read fresher than leopard, and place just as easily.
  • Embossed texture over printed pattern — printed croc has no depth and shows it.
  • Print scale should suit the bag. Big rosettes on a small clutch read as costume.
