Beaded bags have stopped being just for weddings

Beadwork, embroidery and small jewelled bags — carried with denim, not just with a dress.

The interesting part of this trend is not that beaded bags exist — they always have, in a drawer, for weddings. It is that they are being shown and worn in daylight, against ordinary clothes. A heavily embellished little bag with jeans and a plain sweater is the entire look, and it works because the contrast does the talking.

The category has a name worth knowing: a minaudière is a small, rigid, decorative bag carried in the hand, with no strap and no pretence of holding anything. Phone, card, key. That is the capacity, and arguing with it is missing the point — its uselessness is the luxury signal it was invented to send.

On the affordable end, beaded bags are one of the few categories where cheap can genuinely look expensive, because the labour is in the beading and the beading is visible. What gives an inexpensive one away is the lining and the zip pull, not the beads. Look at photographs of the inside before buying.

The failure mode is theme. Beading that forms a picture — a flamingo, a watermelon, a cocktail glass — dates the bag to the summer you bought it. Abstract beadwork, tonal beadwork, or dense single-colour beading is what survives into a second year.

One practical caution, because beaded bags fail in a specific way. The beads are sewn to a fabric backing, and if the thread is a single continuous run rather than knotted in sections, one broken thread unzips a whole row. Bags that are described as hand-beaded tend to be sectioned; heavily machined ones often are not. You cannot tell from a photograph, but you can from the reviews, where this is the complaint that recurs.

Sequins are a separate proposition and worth distinguishing. They catch light rather than holding colour, which makes them read as evening in a way beads do not, and they snag on knitwear. If the appeal of this trend to you is that it works in the daytime, beads are the ones to buy.

How to wear it

  • With denim in the daytime. That contrast is the current version of the trend.
  • Tonal or abstract beading over novelty shapes, which date within a season.
  • Check the lining and the zip pull — that is where an inexpensive one shows.
