Cherry red, and why it is not burgundy
Two reds are in the shops this autumn and they behave like completely different colors. One coordinates. This one does not, and that is the point of it.
If you have looked at the red bags in the shops and thought they all look much the same, they do not, and the difference decides whether the thing works with what you own.
Burgundy has brown in it. That is the whole reason we called it a neutral on its own page: a brown-red sits quietly against navy, gray, camel and denim and asks nothing of them. Cherry red has blue in it and no brown at all. It is a pure, cold, bright hue, and it does the opposite job — it does not coordinate with your coat, it contrasts with it. That is not a fault. It is what you are buying it for.
The practical consequence is that the two reds want completely different outfits. A burgundy bag can be one of several considered things in a look. A cherry red one has to be the only loud thing you are wearing, against something genuinely plain — black, gray, cream, denim, navy. Put it with a print and the outfit starts arguing with itself.
It is also the reason cherry red works best small. The fashion press this season has been unusually consistent that people are taking their red in accessories and separates rather than head to toe, and that is sound: a red bag or a red scarf is a decision you can reverse tomorrow, where a red coat is a decision you have to keep making all winter.
One honest note on timing. Red has had a long run — both cherry and burgundy — and the color forecasting for next year is already turning toward cooler tones. This is a trend at its peak rather than on its way up, which is an argument for buying it at a price you would not mind having spent in two years.
How to wear it
- Against plain and dark: black, charcoal, navy, denim, cream. Never against a print.
- One red thing. A red bag and a red scarf together read as a uniform, not an accent.
- If you already own burgundy, this is not a replacement — they do different jobs and rarely work in the same outfit.
