The cocktail ring, and why one is enough
A single oversized stone on one finger. The evening counterpart to this season’s earrings.
A cocktail ring is a large decorative ring worn for no reason other than that it is large and decorative. The name comes from Prohibition-era parties, where a conspicuous ring on the hand holding an illegal drink was rather the point, and the object has kept that slightly performative quality ever since.
It is having a moment for the same reason big earrings are, and it works particularly well as the alternative to them. Hands are the one place you can put something substantial without it competing with your face. If large earrings feel like more than you want, a cocktail ring gets you the same confidence at a distance the wearer controls — you can see it, and you notice it far more than anyone else does, which for a lot of people is the easiest way into bolder jewellery.
One is the number, on one hand, and the rest of that hand stays bare. A large ring surrounded by three small ones loses all of its scale, which is the whole reason to own it. The traditional placement is the index or ring finger of the right hand — practical rather than symbolic, since it keeps it clear of a wedding band and off the hand most people write with.
Sizing is the thing to get right and it is not the same as a normal ring. A wide band needs a size up from your usual, sometimes a size and a half, because a broad band has more surface contact and will not pass the knuckle at your standard size. Listings rarely mention this. If you are between sizes, go up — a slightly loose cocktail ring rotates, which is annoying, but a tight one cannot be got off at the end of the evening, which is worse.
On stones: a large stone in an inexpensive ring is glass or cubic zirconia and that is entirely fine, but check the setting. Prongs hold better than glue.
How to wear it
- One, on one hand, with the rest of that hand bare. Scale is the whole point.
- Size up — often a full size — for a wide band. It will not clear the knuckle otherwise.
- Prong settings over glued stones. Glue fails and the stone is gone before you notice.
