Colour is coming back, and the accessories go first

Grape, turquoise, coral, azure, vermilion, marigold. After years of camel and black, next spring has decided to be loud — and an accessory is the cheap way to find out whether you like it.

This one is a year out, and we are flagging it now for a practical reason rather than a fashionable one: if colour is coming, accessories are where you find out whether it suits you, because they cost a fraction of a coat and you can stop wearing them on a Tuesday.

Tory Burch's Spring/Summer 2027 show at New York Fashion Week landed on a palette of grape, turquoise, coral, azure, vermilion and marigold — a deliberate break from the camel, chocolate and black that accessories have run on for several years. The collection notes framed it as beauty, utility and humour, which is a reasonable description of what a bright bag does to an otherwise sensible outfit.

Not all six behave the same way against a normal wardrobe, and that is the useful part. Marigold and coral are the easy ones: both are warm, both sit against navy, grey and denim without argument, and both read as deliberate rather than loud. Turquoise and azure need cooler company — they are superb against cream, white and camel and they fight brown. Vermilion is a true orange-red and it is the one that will date fastest, which makes it an argument for a cheap version. Grape is the trap: against black it practically disappears, so it only earns its keep on someone whose coats are grey, cream or camel.

The sensible way in is one saturated piece against a neutral outfit. Two bright accessories at once stop reading as colour and start reading as a scheme, which is a much harder thing to carry off.

How to wear it

  • One bright thing, everything else quiet. Colour works by being the only decision in the outfit.
  • Warm brights — marigold, coral, vermilion — against navy, grey and denim.
  • Cool brights — turquoise, azure — against cream, white and camel, and never against brown.
