The flap bag is the safest buy of the season
The shape that has never actually been out. This year it comes puffier.
Every season has one trend that is not really a trend, and this is it. The flap bag — rectangular body, fold-over front, shoulder or crossbody strap — has been in continuous production and continuous fashion for sixty years. Putting it on a trend list is less a prediction than an acknowledgement.
Which makes it the sensible purchase for anyone who finds the rest of this season exhausting. If you want one bag that will not look dated in three years, it is a mid-size flap in a plain colour with a chain or leather strap, and no amount of runway churn will change that.
The variation being shown is puffiness — padded, quilted, softly rounded rather than crisply rectangular. That is a genuine and fairly small change, and it is the detail that dates a flap bag most reliably in either direction. A sharply structured flap reads slightly formal and slightly older right now; a padded one reads current. Both will be fine in five years.
The functional detail worth checking is the closure, because flap bags have three and they are not equal. A magnetic snap is fast and eventually weakens. A turn-lock is secure, slow, and the mechanism most likely to break on an inexpensive bag. A concealed zip under the flap is the most secure and the least attractive. If the bag is for commuting or travel, the zip is worth the aesthetic compromise.
Strap length is the other thing. A chain that cannot be doubled gives you one length; a chain that can gives you a shoulder bag and a crossbody. That single feature roughly doubles how often a bag gets used.
How to wear it
- A mid-size flap in a plain colour is the least regrettable bag purchase available.
- Padded reads current, sharply structured reads formal. Both age fine.
- A doubleable chain gives you two bags. It is the feature most worth holding out for.
