Gloves as clothing, not as weather gear

Opera length on the runway, short leather in real life. Both are being worn as a layer rather than for the cold.

The shift here is that gloves have stopped being the thing you take off when you get indoors. Worn rolled over a jacket cuff, or with rings on top of the leather, or in a colour that has nothing to do with the coat, they become a layer you are wearing on purpose — and that is a genuinely different object from the pair stuffed in a pocket.

Opera length is the headline and it is a real commitment. A glove reaching past the elbow is evening wear, it makes eating and phone use awkward, and it looks extraordinary in a photograph. If that trade is appealing, satin or fine leather in a dark colour is the version that reads elegant rather than theatrical; anything with visible seaming at that length looks like a costume.

The wearable half of this trend is short leather gloves in a rich dark colour, worn as the finishing detail on tailoring. This is the one to actually buy. Chocolate, oxblood and plum are all being shown, and any of them does more for a coat than black does, because black gloves against a black coat simply disappear.

Fit is everything with gloves and it is the reason so many go unworn. They should be snug enough that there is no loose fabric at the fingertips — leather stretches roughly half a size with wear, so a pair that feels marginally tight when new is correct and a pair that is comfortable in the shop will be baggy by December. Measure around your palm at the knuckles, excluding the thumb, in inches; that number is your glove size.

One thing the runway has not solved and you will care about: most leather gloves do not work on a touchscreen. Look for conductive thread in the fingertips specifically, because it is rarely visible in photographs and is the difference between wearing them and carrying them.

How to wear it

  • Short leather in chocolate or oxblood is the buyable half. Black on black vanishes.
  • Snug when new — leather stretches about half a size. Comfortable in the shop means baggy by winter.
  • Check for touchscreen thread in the fingertips, or you will take them off constantly.
