The hat that sits on your head, not over it
After three years of ever-wider brims, the shapes coming through are small, close and brimless — and they behave completely differently.
If you have watched hat brims get wider every year and quietly decided the trend was not for you, this is the season that turns. The shapes being named now are small: the 1930s pillbox, the newsboy cap, the crochet skull cap, the knitted bucket. None of them has a brim worth speaking of.
That is a functional difference, not a stylistic one, and it is the reason these are easier to wear. A wide brim is a sun tool. It throws a shadow across your face, which is exactly what you want on a beach and exactly what you do not want in a restaurant or a photograph — which is why big hats come off indoors and small ones do not. A pillbox or a newsboy leaves your whole face lit. You can keep it on, and most of the time you will.
They also take up no room. A wide-brim hat cannot go in a bag, cannot be sat on, and has to be carried once you are inside. A knitted bucket or a skull cap folds into a pocket. That sounds trivial and it is the single biggest reason one hat gets worn all winter and another lives on a shelf.
The fit rule is different too, and worth knowing before you order. A brimmed hat has tolerance; a close-fitting one has almost none. Measure around your head just above the ears — most adult women are between 54 and 58cm — and buy to it. And be aware that a true pillbox does not grip at all: it perches, and it needs either pins or hair with enough texture to hold it. On fresh blow-dried hair it will slide off, which is nobody's fault but the hat's.
How to wear it
- A small hat wants a defined neckline — a collar or a scarf — or it can look stranded above a bare jumper.
- Pillbox forward and slightly tilted, not pushed back. Pushed back it reads as a costume.
- One structured thing per outfit: a newsboy cap with an equally structured bag is a lot of stiffness at once.
