The unstructured bag, and why it needs good leather
Buttery, frameless, meant to age. The one trend this season where the material is not negotiable.
Most accessory trends survive being done cheaply. This one does not, and it is worth saying so on a site that mostly sells inexpensive things.
An unstructured bag has no frame, no base board and no stiffening. What holds its shape is the material itself, which means the material is the entire product. Good leather in this shape falls in soft vertical folds, creases where you hold it, and looks better after a year. Coated polyurethane in the same shape does something different: it does not fold, it buckles, in hard horizontal lines that never relax, and within a few months the surface cracks along exactly those lines.
So the honest advice is to buy this one differently. Either spend more than you normally would on a bag, or pick a structured shape instead and come back to this trend another year. A cheap unstructured bag is the worst combination in accessories, and it is also extremely common, because the shape is easy to manufacture and photographs fine when new.
If you are buying at the affordable end anyway, the things that predict a tolerable version are: genuine leather stated in the material field rather than "vegan leather" or "PU"; a lining that is fabric rather than bonded plastic; and visible grain variation in the photographs, because uniform surface texture means a printed coating.
One styling note that applies whatever you spend. A slouchy bag looks deliberate against structure and shapeless against softness. With a tailored coat it reads relaxed; with an oversized knit and wide trousers it reads like you are carrying laundry.
How to wear it
- This is the one trend where cheap materials actively fail. Spend, or pick another shape.
- Against structure — a tailored coat, a stiff jean. Not against soft, loose clothes.
- Look for grain variation in the photos. A perfectly uniform surface is printed coating.
