Zips and buckles as the whole design

Visible fastenings, oversized pulls, hardware left on the outside. Where inexpensive bags either win or lose badly.

Hardware is the part of a bag that gives away what it cost, which makes a trend built entirely on exposed hardware an unusually revealing one to shop at the affordable end.

The trend itself is simple: zips on the outside rather than concealed, oversized pulls, D-rings and buckles left visible, sometimes in a contrasting finish. Done well it looks industrial and deliberate. Done badly it looks like a bag that came apart at the factory.

What separates the two is weight and finish, and both are assessable from photographs. Good hardware is solid metal with an even, slightly warm plating, and it casts a real shadow against the bag. Cheap hardware is plated plastic or thin stamped metal, reads flat and slightly gray in photographs, and — the reliable giveaway — the zip pull is disproportionately small for the zip teeth. If the pull looks like an afterthought, the whole bag is one.

There is also a wear argument that matters more here than in most categories. Exposed hardware is exposed to abrasion. Plating on a visible zip pull wears through at the fold within months of daily use, and once it does the bag looks tired regardless of the condition of everything else. Matte black or gunmetal hardware hides wear far better than shiny gold, which is worth knowing if this is a bag you intend to use every day rather than occasionally.

On styling: hardware-heavy bags are the one category that genuinely does not want gold jewelry alongside them. Silver, or nothing.

How to wear it

  • Check the zip pull against the teeth. A small pull on big teeth means cheap hardware throughout.
  • Matte black and gunmetal hide plating wear. Shiny gold shows it within months.
  • Silver jewelry or none. Gold fights visible hardware.
