One wide cuff instead of five thin bangles

The wrist has gone from a stack to a single object. Quieter to wear and considerably louder to look at.

The bangle stack had a long run and it had one real drawback, which is that it is audible. Five thin bracelets on a wrist make noise against a desk, a steering wheel and a keyboard, and most people who wore them eventually stopped for that reason rather than a stylistic one.

The cuff solves it and looks stronger. A single wide band — twisted, open-ended, fluid rather than decorated — is one object rather than five, and it reads as architecture instead of accumulation. Silver is the material being pushed hardest, for a practical reason worth knowing: it is soft enough to be worked into organic sculptural shapes that would be prohibitively expensive in gold, which is why the interesting forms this season are mostly silver-coloured.

Fitting a cuff is the part nobody explains. An open cuff is sized by the gap, not the circumference — the opening should sit at the narrowest part of your wrist, underneath, and the gap should be roughly an inch. Too wide a gap and it rotates constantly so the opening ends up on top, which looks wrong and is the most common complaint about them. Most metal cuffs can be gently squeezed to close the gap; do it slowly, off the wrist, and never more than a little at a time, because repeated bending work-hardens the metal until it snaps.

Width against your own wrist is the aesthetic decision. A narrow wrist takes a wide cuff beautifully and a broad wrist usually looks better in a medium one, which is the reverse of what people expect. Try the widest thing you can find before assuming it is not for you.

Worn with a watch on the other arm is the current arrangement. Both on one wrist is the noise problem again, reinvented.
