Statement earrings are doing the work this season
Cascading drops, Art Deco shapes, hoops larger than you last wore. The cheapest way into the season.
If you only change one thing about how you accessorise this year, this is the one with the best return. Earrings sit next to your face, which means they are the accessory people actually register, and they are the only category where the affordable version and the expensive version photograph almost identically.
Three shapes are being shown. Cascading drops — long, articulated, moving when you move. Art Deco geometry — fans, stepped shapes, hard angles in gold or clear stones. And hoops at a scale most people last owned in a different decade. All three are large. That is the trend; the size is not incidental to it.
The practical objection to all of this is weight, and it is a fair one. Big earrings drag on the lobe, and after four hours a heavy pair stops being jewellery and becomes a decision you regret. Hollow metal rather than solid, resin or acrylic rather than stone, and a post-and-back rather than a hook all cut the weight substantially without changing how it looks from three feet away. Weight is listed on most Amazon listings; under 10g per earring is comfortable all day, over 20g is an evening-only proposition.
The styling question people get stuck on is what to wear with them, and the honest answer for once is nothing. A large earring is a complete accessory decision. Skip the necklace, keep the hair back so the earring is actually visible, and let it be the only thing happening.
How to wear it
- Hair back or up. A statement earring hidden behind hair is a wasted purchase.
- No necklace. The earring is the whole decision.
- Under 10g each for all-day wear. Check the listed weight — it is usually there.
